What's the difference between a Humidifier Steamer and a Humidifier Ultrasonic?

BONECO clears the air

Key Factors to consider when choosing between these two types.

You've just made the decision to buy a humidifier, and as you've probably noticed, there are various types to choose from. Now, you might be feeling a bit uncertain, wondering which way to go. Don't worry — today, we're here to shed light on the characteristics of an Ultrasonic Humidifier and a Steam Humidifier.

The main difference between a Steam Humidifier and an Ultrasonic Humidifier lies in the way they produce and release moisture into the air:

Steam Humidifier

How it operates: This type of humidifier uses a heating element to boil the water and generate steam – free of bacteria, viruses, lime and impurities. The steam is then mixed with cool room air before being released at a hand-warm temperature into the air.

Pros:

  • Quick and efficient increase of humidity levels and room temperature (no prolonged or permanent operation necessary)
  • Has the added benefit of killing some bacteria and viruses during the heating process.
  • Typically avoids the issue of white dust
  • No additional filter cartridge necessary
  • Easy maintenance
  • Increase in the room temperature
  • Fragrance container for essential oils

Cons:

  • Consumes more energy compared to Ultrasonic Humidifiers
  • Tends to be noisier due to the operation of the fan and heating component

Ultrasonic Humidifier

How it operates: Ultrasonic Humidifiers use high-frequency technology, where the water is converted into a micro-fine mist and given off to the indoor air by a fan.

Pros:

  • Operates with energy efficiency
  • Generally quieter in operation compared to Steam Humidifiers

Cons:

  • May produce white dust if using hard water and not operating with a water filter, as minerals can be released into the air along with the mist
  • Typically removes fewer impurities compared to Steam Humidifiers

When deciding between these types, consider factors like energy consumption, noise levels, maintenance requirements, and whether you prefer warm or cool mist. Additionally, if concerns about bacteria or impurities are important to you, explore features such as filters to reduce water hardness or antimicrobial treatments, like our A250 Aqua Pro and A7017 Ionic Silver Stick® specially designed for BONECO Humidifiers.

Did neither the Steamer nor the Ultrasonic convince you? You might want to take a look at other humidifying systems, such as the Evaporator or the Air Washer. We offer a system description of each humidifier type, which you can find on each product page of our website.
