What is the best way to remove pollen at home?

Spring is finally here, and that means it’s time for blooming flowers, warmer weather, and sadly, pollen. Pollen is a fine powder that is released by trees, grasses, and weeds to fertilize other plants of the same species. It’s an essential part of nature, but it can also cause a lot of misery if you’re allergic to it. Removing pollen from your home and environment may seem like a daunting task, but with the right steps and products, it can be relatively easy to do. Pollen is a major allergen for many people and can cause serious health issues. Almost 30% of world’s population has a pollen allergy so it's important to keep your home free of pollen to protect yourself. During the main pollen season, pollen is everywhere around you and here are some tips to help you remove pollen from your home and environment.

1. Clean surfaces regularly

One of the best ways to remove pollen from your home is to clean surfaces regularly. Pollen can be brought in from the outside on clothes, shoes, and other items, so it's important to clean surfaces that may be exposed to pollen. Sweep and mop floors, dust furniture, and wipe down counters and other surfaces often to remove pollen. You should also vacuum carpets and rugs to remove any pollen that has collected.

2. Use air purifiers

Air purifiers can be used to help reduce the amount of pollen in your home. Air purifiers work by trapping allergens like pollen, dust, and pet dander. Look for air purifiers that have a HEPA particle filter, which is the most effective type of filter for removing pollen. In acute cases it is recommended to only use the air purifier when you are not in the same room, as the moving air picks up pollen from surfaces and it takes a moment for the purifier to clean the air of them.

3. Change air filters

Another way to reduce the amount of pollen in your home is to change the air filters in your heating and cooling system. Air filters help trap pollen, dust, and other allergens, so changing them regularly will keep them efficient and help reduce the amount of pollen in the air. Check the air filters at least once per season and change them according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

4. Keep windows and doors closed

Pollen can easily enter your home through open windows and doors, so keep them closed when possible. If you need to open a window or door, try to do so when the pollen count is low. You can check the local pollen count online or on the weather report.

People spend on average about 80% (60-90%) of their time indoors, so removing pollen from your home and environment can help reduce the number of allergens in the air and make your home a more comfortable space. By following the tips above, you can protect yourself and help make your home much more pollen-free.
