Plus: Tips on how to deal with allergies & what to consider when buying the right air purifier

Allergies are one of the most common chronic diseases that affect millions of people around the world. They occur when the immune system overreacts to foreign substances in the body, that are typically harmless. Three of the more common allergens are pollen, pet dander, and dust. All three of those can be "transmitted" by air and can have an effect when coming in contact with skin and mucus membranes.

What can be done to limit the exposure to those allergens?

There are a couple of simple steps that can be taken, for example limiting exposure to pollen by keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons, and using allergen-proof covers for pillows, mattresses, and bedding. Regular grooming of pets can help with the exposure to pet dander and cleaning of indoor surfaces helps to reduce the exposure to all three, especially when using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. Now another great way to reduce exposure, that requires very little maintenance, is of course using an air purifier.

There are a couple of things that should be considered when buying an air purifier for such a use. The following factors are all important when deciding for the right solution for you.

  • The performance of the air purifier should be suitable for the room size you want to use it in.
  •  The air purifier will always have the best effect when it's being used continuously during the day.
  • It can be beneficial to not run the air purifier while you are in the same room as it will move air around which could lead to a temporarily higher exposure to allergens in the air until the purifier has had time to filter them out.
  •  Regular maintenance of the air purifier is recommended, especially replacing the filter according to the manufacturer's recommendations, as a clogged-up filter will lose its effectiveness.
  • Placing the air purifier more central in the room will allow it to move the air around more efficiently and can lead to quicker results.

Something else that can be given special attention to, when deciding for an air purifier are additional certifications, marking products as especially suitable for allergy sufferers. One of the better known and widely accepted certifications for this is ECARF.  ECARF is the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation. Their mission statement pretty much sums up why an ECARF certification is trusted by allergy sufferers as it reads as follows:

The mission of the non-profit European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF) is to ensure that people with allergies receive the best possible guidance in everyday matters and treatment options.

Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h. c. Torsten Zuberbier
ECARF-Chairman of the Board

This is why we are working on getting our air treatment products certified with ECARF to provide additional guidance for our customers looking for solutions towards an allergen-free life.

Unfortunately, complete avoidance of allergens is nearly impossible even with using ECARF certified products. But there are several additional measures individuals can take to find relief from these allergies, such as allergy medication, allergy shots (immunotherapy), pet care (regular bathing and grooming of indoor pets). The ECARF website (www.ecarf.org) is also a great source of information for these additional measures that can be taken.

Allergies can be frustrating and disruptive, but with the right strategies and treatments, individuals can find relief and manage their symptoms effectively. It's important to consult with a healthcare professional or allergist for a proper diagnosis and personalized recommendations.
